Word Is.. Russell T Davis Isn't Popular With Many 'Old' Dr Who Fans

"The Original Series Is Close To The Heart, The New Series Is Close To The Gutter"

Russell T Davis - the man who likes to make sure gay is featured in as many of his programmes as possible - is another NewsZone favourite for all the wrong reasons.

When he started out, he seemed quite a good writer - with some deservingly acclaimed scripts and productions. But it seems ever since Queer As Folk hit the big time Mr T Davis has decided he's the God of television writing and can do no wrong. If you read the official BBC forums, you might also believe viewers feel the same way - however we've had numerous complains that these forums are edited to remove most of the critical comments of him and his BBC productions.

There are many original series Doctor Who fans that find the RTD "must be made in Wales" series a total turn off. They are far from impressed that the original long-running Doctor Who - which was a serious science fiction drama - has been turned into a 'teens comedy' show with a dash of sci-fi thrown in.

List of R.T.D Offences in Doctor Who/Torchwood

* Setting nearly all the episodes, bar two so far, on Earth or Space Stations......the Tardis can go ANYWHERE in time and SPACE!

* If a scene is set in London it's probably been filmed in Wales. If a set is set in Scotland...it was filmed in Wales. If a scene is set on an Alien planet..it was filmed in Wales.....Too much usage of Wales! You are making a science fiction show not a promotional video for Wales!

* Burping Bins

* Farting Aliens

* Stunt Casting (Davina McCall, Anne Robinson, Susanne and Trinny et al)

* The Gay Agenda! Constant references to homosexuality and gay sex in nearly every episode of Season Two

* Giving us WPC Gwen Cooper

* Those annoying welsh accents

* Totallly forgetting that Doctor Who is a family show, not a childrens. Result? He has dumbed his scripts down and filled them with "silly" moments

* For hyping up every episode as the BEST THING EVER

* For hyping up the special effects even though they are crap

* For making stories revolving around special effects, because you think they're good, instead of concentrating on the story/plot!

* For writing an appauling opening episode of Torchwood in which he killed the ONLY completely decent character, Suzie.

* Spreading the Doctor Who brand too thin meaning viewers will get bored of it a lot quicker. There is: Doctor Who, Torchwood, Sarah Jane Adventures, Doctor Who Confidential, Torchwood Confidential, Totally Doctor Who and now an Animinated Doctor Who.

* Considering launching ANOTHER spin-off focusing on Rose in the Alternate Universe.....give already!

* For believing you are the best Doctor Who writer when you are actually the worse!

Russell T.Davies: Previous Experience

1990: Dark Season - CBBC drama, starring an young Kate Winslet, about a group of friends, and their teacher, coming up against a mysterious force trying to take over the world via computers. Also featured Jacqueline Pearce in the next adventure where a super-computer is revealed to be burried beneath the school. Jacqueline Pearce, formerly Servalan, plays a Neo Nazi who's followers wear really bad blonde wigs! Surprisingly it isn't actually as bad as it sounds.

1993: Century Falls - Another CBBC drama this time about a Celtic shrine near a creepy village. An end of the world type drama featuring several bit actors from Doctor Who. An improvement on Dark Season, well written and very creepy - for a children's show.

1993 - 1995: Childrens Ward - ITV children's fare set, unsurprisingly, on a children's ward in a hospital. Popular at the time but looking bad its horribly cliched, features bad performances from the children and dodgy scripting. Worse than Grange Hill but enjoyable at the time.

1994: Revelations - Late night ITV soap that has a reputation for crazy plots, trashy acting and being axed very quickly. For a soap that centred around a Bishop and his religious family it served up helpings of murder, lots of, gay sons, explosions and lots of affairs!

1999/2000 Queer as Folk - Probably his most famous piece of television, apart from Doctor Who, the series revolved around the lives, loves and shags of three gaymen in the Canal Street of Manchester. It caused outright controversery with the British press and television watchdogs. Mary Whitehouse was most appalled by it - so a high recommendation! The show was famous for its graphic portrayal of gay sex, lesbian sex and drug taking. Was successfully copied in America where the show ran for an impressive five years and even featured MORE graphic sex scenes, with no public outcry at all!

2001: Bob and Rose - Drama about a gayman falling in love with a woman. Needless to say was hated by the gay community who felt it proved what many religious people claimed - homosexuality was just a phase and could be cured. The show only lasted one season and didn't get impressive ratings or reviews.

2003: The Second Coming - Starring Christopher Eccleston as a man who believes he is Jesus. Frankly over hyped, over rated rubbish.

2005: Casanova - Lavish peroid drama make in assiocation with LWT. Starring David Tennant as the famous young lover, met with rave reviews and high ratings. Visually plesaing on the eye, we mean the sets!, and well produced.

Russell started out good but has had more than his fare share of misses over the years. While Dark Season and Century Falls where well written children's drama his transition to adult television hasn't always resulted in good shows, Bob & Rose are points in hand. Since Queer as Folk his stuff is hyped up to the near heavens and frankly some of it has been dire, The Second Coming/Mine all Mine. Russell is starting to believe the hype and so desperately needs to come down from Cloud 9!

Russell T.Davies: News and Editorials

No More Space Travel for the Doc

The news that the Doctor is to be stuck on earth once more leaves me feeling angry and cheated. The premise of Doctor Who is that the Tardis can travel anywhere in time and space. The original series managed this very well travelling to a vast number of planets and exploring different storylines. The Earth under threat from invasion has worn a little thin now. It has been done so many times in the past two seasons that, for now, there is no more mileage in it.

Now this isn't the first time Doctor who has been confined to Earth. The first seasons of Jon Pertwee (1970-1974) saw the Doctor exiled to Earth by the time lords. However, the stories there were much more successful than anything the new series has produced. The first season of Pertwee's was gritty and grim tackling subjects like the dangers of science, xenophobia, morals, nature, and environmental disasters in the space of four very different stories. The only invasion story was Spearhead From Space. The other three tackled different subject matter. But it soon became apparent to the producers that the show would have to return to its space routes quickly to keep the interest of the fans.

And that's where we come to the next series. If it is all set on earth or space stations orbiting the earth then very quickly people are going to get bored of it. Aliens attacking the earth have been done a million times before. The show needs to return to its space roots and soon. It will become boring and repetitive by staying on earth, the show needs to charter new territory. The argument of budget restrictions doesn't wash with me at all.

The new series of Battlestar Galactica has a small budget but it manages to do special effects much better, storylines much better and has visited different worlds. None of the fans have gone "oh look it's a forest that looks like an earth one" so that argument doesn't work either. The problem is Ron Moore of Battlestar Galactica is willing to push back the boundaries and challenge people whereas Russell T.Davies is complacent. He doesn't think Doctor Who needs to challenge the viewers or dare to be different because he now just expects people to tune in.

The best thing for Doctor Who is for Davies to go. He's brought the show back and made it popular again, there's no doubting that. But a show like Doctor Who needs new imaginative input every few years for it to work. After nearly three years on the show Davies needs to move on and let someone who is willing to take the show in a totally different direction.

Sarah Jane's CBBC Adventures

Ever since Elizabeth Sladen returned to Doctor Who, as Sarah-Jane Smith, earlier this year for the second season episode, School reunion, speculation has been high that the character will get its own spin-off. At last the BBC have confirmed this as true but to the fear of this fan, and others I imagine, it'll be a CBBC show!

Quite why Russell T.Davies has decided to make the show specifically for children is beyond us. Perhaps he is labouring under the misapprehension that Doctor Who is also a kiddies show, which I'd like to point out it ISN'T. Doctor Who was always made by the DRAMA department at the Beeb and was considered a family show.

Now I think the idea of a spin-off with Sarah-Jane is a great idea, the character is without doubt the most memorable companion of the classic series and Liz Sladen is a talented actress, but I think it would be better received within the fan community as family show.

I've seen initial details of the plot for the 60 minute special, which will be followed by a full series, and quiet frankly I'm cringing already. It sounds like a bland, unoriginal plot and is below the standards Sarah-Jane and Liz Sladen deserve.

No doubt Russell T.Davies will brand it as 'brilliant' but, then again he said the 'Slitheen' were brilliant and they were.. appalling. A contender for worst monster in Doctor Who history ever, beating even the Quarks!

Word Is.. Steve Frost Is A Tad Unpopular With Some Corrie Fans

Makes Brookside Seem Tame

Sensational and Pantomime, not two formats you'd expect to come together, but for producer Steve Frost he's made a career out of turning some of the nations favourite soaps into such things.

Emmerdale, under Frost, started to employ ex-sitcom stars and the slapstick increased. Yet in the same era Brookside-style regular sensational plots were also on the increase, there was a time when soaps would do something dramatic once in a blue moon, under Frost it almost became a monthly event.

Whatever happened to character driven storylines? Under Frost this has also been eroded from Emmerdale, and now, Coronation Street - his latest victim.

Corrie was once renowned for its characters, and how they reacted to situations. Today its about sensational plots and pantomime acting. How times change. Steve Frost has obviously learned a lot from old Corrie and Emmerdale Producer Tony Wood - who also seemed to think sitcom mixed with unrealistic weekly sensation was a great idea.

Sadly young audiences have been fed on such drivel for too long, and now seem to expect big events all the time, caring little for clever dialog or storytelling - wanting just big explosions and clever effects.

Frost Files:

Some of the things our Frosty has done to make soaps a bit too silly-sensational:

* Emmergale - Trisha was killed with chimney, carry-on style effects added to the humour in this plot.

* Clearly annoyed by people suggesting Emmerdale was rubbish, he blew up the rubbish truck in protest.

* Disgusting Jamie-Frankie-Danny "love triangle" He likes his love triangles, maybe he's not getting enough?

* 16-year-old David Platt blackmailing 30-year-old Tracey Barlow to have sex with him. Yuk.

* Yes that other love triangle, Sonny-Sean-Michelle - first bi-sexual story for Corrie.

* The storyline everyone guessed at Christmas - the totally none-shocker expose that baby Holly actually isn't Jason's but is Charlies!

* Recycled plot from the 1960's involving an unexploded WWII bomb being found underneath the Peacock's garden.......which was completely missed by the builders of the late 1980s!

* Bringing back unpopular characters like the vile Vernon and bland Kelly........what about bringing back decent characters?

* The mysterious disappearances of characters for huge peroids of times without any explination being given at all. Worst offenders? Dev and Lloyd who disappear up to six months at a time but still manage to keep abreast of all the gossip - maybe they're watching Corrie at home?

* Claiming Corrie is doing "soap firsts" such as the bisexual love triangles when....er they clearly aren't.

Unexploded bomb saga for The Street

An unexploded bomb from World War Two will cause havoc on Coronation Street. The bomb is discovered beneath the garden of the Peacocks and the street is evacuated while bomb disposal experts move in.

This is NOT the first time such a storyline has been played out on the street. In the 1960's an unexploded bomb was also found on the other side of the street forcing an evacuation to the Mission centre, where Ena Sharples worked.

Which begs the question just how many unexploded bombs are there under Coronation Street? And why wasn't the peacock one found earlier? Surely when the factory was demolished in the late 1980's and the new houses built the bomb would have been discovered by the builders? Or maybe that will be overlooked by the writers?

Yet Another Stereotypical Storyline

Coronation Street is to feature a storyline about a Polish worker at the factory. Actress Wanda Opanlinska will play new factory girl Vicki but her fellow workers won't be happy with her arrival.

Several of the factory girls will apparently rant about "foreign invasion" while the bosses will joke about "little polish pay packets". However, Coronation Street bosses are confident the scenes will not upset viewers despite the recent Big Brother racist row. Although the scenes were filmed before Big Brother began producers are still confident, despite feelings being high over such issues, that fans will not be upset.

At NewsZone we are dismayed at this storyline, not because its racist, but because it is playing up to two stereotypes. It is playing up to the stereotype of foreign workers arriving in Britain and "taking" other people's jobs and playing up to the stereotype of such workers being bullied by their English colleagues. Can't Coronation Street be original and move away from those two stereotypes and try to do a storyline that will do some good, such as showing how the residents on the street help Vicki to adjust to being in England? However, Coronation Street seem to like walking stereotypes as Sean Tully is the perfect example of one.

All it takes is a some decent research or a good memory!

Digital Spy are claiming that Coronation Street will feature soap's first bisexual storyline. The news story on the soap page of Digital Spy says:

"Coronation Street will feature soap's first bisexual love triangle in the near future.

"The triangle between Sean (Antony Cotton), Sonny (Pal Aron) and Michelle (Kym Ryder) will make soap opera history when it kicks off, with Sonny admitting he is bisexual."

Nice to see someone at Digital Spy hasn't done their research! EastEnders had a bisexual storyline in 1997 involving Tony Hills, Simon Raymond and Tiffany Raymond. Tiffany was dating Tony before he got together with her brother but Tiffany wasn't so innocent because she was sleeping with Grant. And before we get emails saying that Tony was confused and really gay, he wasn't. Tony admitted he was bisexual before he left the Square with Simon.

More recently it was Family Affairs who featured a bisexual love triangle.

Of course what Digital Spy actually mean is Coronation Street's first bisexual love triangle, not soap in general! And to find out what we think of this bisexual storyline visit our editoral section here.

UPDATED:

Quick list of previous bisexual storylines

Steve Frost, Corrie producer, seems to think his upcoming bisexual love triangle, involving the awful Sean (Anthony Cotton) is the first of its kind in soap opera history. Sorry Steve but er we think these guys got there first!

EastEnders:

Tony/Simon/Tiffany - 1997

Sonia/Martin/Namoi - 2006

Emmerdale:

Charity/Chris/Zoe - 2001

Family Affairs:

Mel/Brendan/Sean - 2004

Footballers Wives:

Conrad/Noah/Tanya - Season Three

Crossroads

Bradley/Tracey/Tom - 2001

And they are just the ones we could come up without actually doing any research! So we're a little bit bemused as to why Steve Frost seems to think his bisexual love triangle will be the first such one but then again he did think the Jamie/Frankie Baldwin relationship was a good storyline&ldots;.whereas most viewers thought it was plain sick.

Sore Losers AGAIN!

Another award ceremony and another story about the cast of Coronation Street getting stroppy and childish about loosing an award. At the National Television Awards, broadcasted by ITV, and hosted by Sir Trevor MacDonald the Manchester based soap lost the Best Soap award to London rivals, EastEnders.

According to the Sun fuming ITV bosses stormed out of the award ceremony at this point to bitch, rant, rave and stump their feet about loosing the award. A source within ITV is alleged to have said:

""There was no way we were going to sit and clap for a show that's won something that's rightfully ours. EastEnders won after a year when they sank to ratings of just 3.7million. We just walked out into the corridor when EastEnders went up on stage - and cracked open another bottle of bubbly It's just upsetting as EastEnders has a younger audience and they vote by text - while Corrie's audience are a bit older and don't really get to grips with that."

Talk about bad losers but this just proves what many have said for a while now, ITV and Corrie are arrogant and bad losers, they simply expect to win every award going because they misguidedly believe their own hype. This kind of behaviour from the cast of the senior soap, and the executives of ITV, is disgusting, you don't see the casts of Emmerdale, Hollyoaks or The Bill acting in this way. They however, probably understand that its not the winning that matters but all the hard work that went into the soap.

As for the award being rightfully Corrie's, for what may we ask? The senior soap has had a run of appalling storylines lately and is even being criticised by its own cast members, past and present. The current storyline between Frankie, Jamie and Danny Baldwin, supposedly a favourite of producer's Steve Frost, is beyond the realms of good taste while the David Platt storyline has dragged on for far too long. Meanwhile the other characters in the street are rapidly becoming unsympathetic, bland and boring.

After loosing the award to EastEnders the cast of Corrie, those who had travelled down to the awards, snubbed the awards party and went back to their own hotel to have drinks. This isn't the first time such an event has happened, at the SAME award ceremony last year the cast acted exactly the same. And earlier in the year they were fuming after loosing to EastEnders at the National Soap Awards and the Inside Soap awards.

A word of advice for the Corrie cast and ITV executives from all of us at Newzone, grow up and get over yourself. Start making good television because that is what you are paid to do, not to win awards. Put quality over quanity, cut back the amount of episodes each week and stop the spoilt brat routine because that is why you don't win awards, the viewers are simply fed up of you sulking when you don't. When you start to deserve to win the awards again you will.

Daddy Cool?

In a storyline that is sure to cause controversy, and divide opinions, Sean Tully (played by Anthony Cotton) is set to become suggorgate father to Violet and Jamie's child! Violet will discover that she is pregnant but will also find out about Jamie's feelings for Frankie, his step mother. Violet ends their relationship and turns to old pal Sean for support. Sean then agrees to become a father to the child. Sean is also set for some romance when he becomes involved with a friend of the Connor family.

The storyline is sure to cause some press controversy as the conservatives complain about the nature of the storyline, much the same they complain about anything really. However, it will divide opinion amongst Corrie fans. Despite the fact that like to think Sean is a popular character, and really hype him up, many in the Corrie fandom actually dislike the character. They have made their opinions on him very clear in forums, like Digital Spy. This storyline is sure to cause many of them to become even more vocal.

We don't want you back!

Coronation Street fans haven't reacted well to the news that Warren Baldwin (played by Danny Young) and Vernon (played by former EastEnders actor Ian Reddington) are to return to the street. Both characters are tipped to return next month with Warren returning for the Danny/Frankie exit storyline, his return is speculated to be limited to two episodes, while Vernon returns to try and win back Liz MacDonald.

However, on many internet forums fans of the ITV soap have been focal in their dislike of the characters and their returns. This follows on from news last week that Anthony Cotton had signed a two year contract to remain at Coronation Street which also didn't go down too well with some fans. The fans claim that the character of Sean Tully is a poor representative of the gay community and is a walking stereotype, other criticism fall on Anthony Cotton's acting ability.

Another face that is due to return to the Street, and sure to get a mixed reaction one and off screen, is crazy Becky Grainger who is back to cause more trouble. And Craig Charles, who plays Lloyd in the Street, will return after his suspension for drug taking.

Same Old Story

According to The Daily Star the cast of Coronation Street and Emmerdale are up in arms after EastEnders won a string of awards. The London soap also won "Best Soap" for the 10th year running which, according to the paper, prompted angry responses from Corrie and Emmerdale members. An apparent insider said, "It just doesn't make sense. Every year we attract more and more viewers but they still keep winning, who is voting for them?" Another inside, apparently from Corrie, said similar things.

Every time and award ceremony happens and EastEnders does well the papers usually print such a story, but can we trust it? In the past high profile cast members of Coronation Street have been vocal is their anger at EastEnders winning awards and ITV do love to hype their soaps. Just watching an awards ceremony on television is confirmation enough, every time EastEnders wins just watch the faces of SOME of the Corrie cast, not all, just some.

The only problem is here that these insiders, if they indeed exist, have their facts WRONG, hardly surprising. EastEnders nearly always beats Emmerdale by some two million viewers and Coronation Street only just beats EastEnders in the ratings, often or not it's down to slim margins. On several occasions EastEnders have beaten Coronation Street, so the argument that Emmerdale/Corrie do better in the ratings isn't correct. Furthermore what storylines have Coronation Street had this year that are worthy of awards? The only one is Mike Baldwin's demise all the others have fallen well below par.

What's more EastEnders fans care about their soap and they vote where as Emmerdale and Corrie fans just assume that their soaps will win, just like members of their casts. The "insiders" asked who voted for the awards. The answer is the fans and it's the fans that clearly think that EastEnders deserves to win and Corrie/Emmerdale doesn't.

And as a final point you never really read about Hollyoaks or Doctors cast members moaning that they haven't won, do you? Maybe Corrie and Emmerdale cast members just shut up and take a leaf out of their junior's books!

Filed:25/09/06 By Douglas Lambert

Related Facts: ITV always hype it up over winning with Emmerdale in the ratings when both Emmerdale and EastEnders air head-to-head. What ITV fail to point out of course, is the fact EastEnders has a mainstream omnibus for their soap, which Emmerdale has not. (It has repeats on digital, but not on the main channel) so when all the mainstream ratings are added up, EastEnders always wins. A simple case of people watching Emmerdale on the night, and catching up with EastEnders at the weekend.

Paul O'Grady calls Corrie Producer 'Unprofessional'

Steve Frost the producer of Coronation Street - known mainly for turning Emmerdale into a soap full of has-been soap stars and faded sitcom actors - was branded 'unprofessional' by presenter Paul O'Grady live on Channel 4 today.

It follows remarks Frost said to a newspaper about rival soap, EastEnders and one of their storylines involving Downs Syndrome. Paul had spent a number of years before his rise to fame working for social services, and commented that he felt EastEnders had got the story 'spot on.'

Steve Frost's childish and petty comments don't do Coronation Street any favours. It's already been looked upon as a soap out of touch with the real world, his cartoon style of producing isn't going to help matters and trying to divert attention away from the numerous amounts of bad press his show is getting for off-screen debortuary has backfired badly - with viewers and professionals taking a hard look at all the failings of 'ITV's flagship programme'.

You know a programme is in trouble, when even stars still in the series raise concerns about it's quality. Especially those who have been there during its golden years of the 1960s such as William Roache.

Steve Frost and his opinions on other soaps are best kept quiet, especially when his own is in a far worse state storyline and acting talent wise than EastEnders.

Comments from the public include: "I don't think Corrie will have the same credibility whilst he has the helm." "I'm pleased Paul had a go at Steve Frost" "He compared the downs story to Jamie and Frankie in Corrie, how out of touch with the real world is this man?" "Steve Frost hires fallen reality stars and brings us below par storylines, he needs to spend more time watching Coronation St than its rivals. This once mighty soap is fast becoming a laughing stock." and " Where has the quality gone from The Street? Actors like Anthony Cotton (I use the word actor loosely) and that has-been reality star make the show appauling. Steve needs to sort his own show out before calling anyone else."

I WON'T be back

Sally Lindsey has turned down an offer to return to Coronation Street next year. Her character, Shelley, returns this week for her mother's marriage to Fred Elliot. However, this will be the last time we see her, apparently. Sally Lindsey has decided not to return to the Street, again, for the time being.

Meanwhile Anthony Cotton has agreed to stay on the show until December 2007 in what the tabloids claim is a £200,000 a year contract! They also claim that the character Sean is set to be at the centre of an upcoming explosive plot. More details we get them.

And the street has been rocked by the weekend papers once again. Last week the tabloids claimed that Debra Stephenson and Bradley Walsh (Frankie and Danny Baldwin on the soap) were having a secret affair. This week the papers claim that Rupert Hill and Jenny Platt (Jamie Baldwin and Violet Wilson) are also having an affair. Meanwhile Bradley Walsh appears yet again, this time after being caught in a brothel. See our What the Papers Say section for further details.

Update: I might be back, actually

Sally Lindsey told Paul O'Grady today (28/09/06) that she hasn't said she will never return to Coronation Street, however she just wants to take a long break from it. She declined to return next year, but commented that she may come back "sometime, just hopefully not for a while."

Coronation Street Latest News

There have been several Corrie stories over the past few days we haven't reported on as yet so here they are:

Alison King, best known for her role in cult drama Dream Team (Sky One), is set to appear on the street. Alison, who played fan favourite Linda Block in Dream Team, will play the wife of Paul Connor (Sean Gallagher). According to producers she'll be a WAG style character that will cause plenty of drama. Expect to see Alison King on screen from Christmas.

Meanwhile the revelation that Debra Stevenson and Bradley Walsh are having a relationship has had knock on affects for producers. According to the tabloids on Sunday, neither turned up for recording on Monday, with several key scenes due to be filmed.

More importantly however, their departure storyline may have to be re-written. According to the tabloids it was planned for their characters to leave together for Spain but now producers fear the storyline will mirror real life and rewrites could be ordered.

And finally the tabloids reported that Anthony Cotton (Sean Tully in the soap) was demanding a payrise of £15,000 a year to stay with the soap. However, sources close to Anthony have denied this saying his contract is under negotiation at the moment but no such demands have been made.

Corrie Producer 'slams' EastEnders

According to the Sun newspaper Corrie boss, Steve Frost, has attacked the standards of acting on EastEnders. He has blasted Emma Barton and Perry Fenwick for their acting in the current Down's syndrome storyline.

Now I haven't seen any of the storyline so I can't comment on that but I can comment on the standard, of lack of, of acting on Coronation Street. The show is currently in a bit of a pickle. The stars are threatening to go on strike because of pay cuts, the busy schedule isn't going down well and the is about to lose so many of its 'popular' faces so maybe Steve Frost should be concentrating on his own show rather than attacking others?

Before we comment on acting on Corrie lets start with storylines. We have the on going saga of David Platt's transformation into devil-boy Damien. The gullabity of Gail is being quite frankly unbelievable. I just don't think she'd believe all the rubbish that David spouts. Then there's the equally boring Marie/Charlie storyline that see's Charlie become even more of a pantomime villain. There's the possibility of Danny and Frankie getting back together, boring and unoriginal! They've done that with Sally and Kevin so why bother doing it again? Currently the producers are trying to make us believe that Jamie Baldwin may be gay, well he's not. He fancies his stepmother, Frankie. In a couple of weeks they even snog, you may want to avoid that scene. All these storylines are hardly reverting stuff and then there's the acting.

Bradley Walsh is wooden and his performance is just totally unbelievable. Anthony Cotton doesn't act on the show at all - he just plays himself. Bill Ward doesn't cut the mustard as Charlie, though that may be due to poor scripts and there are many more who are just rubbish but there to make up the numbers such as Andy Whyment as Kirk, Jimmi Harkishin as Dev and talentless but pretty looking, Sam Robertson as Adam.

So Steve Frost isn't in the position to comment on other soap's acting, especially as he came from Emmerdale, a show he nearly turned into a sitcom.

Word Is.. Fiona Phillips Isn't Popular!

If you were a regular at the old-style NewsZone site, you’ll know that one of the people that got us the most mail was Mrs GMTV herself, Fiona Phillips. Unfortunately for her, none of it was ever prasing…

Fiona Phillips - Britain's most disliked presenter?

"A few words for NewsZone that describe Fiona from personal experience: Patronising, conceited ,obnoxious, snide, sarcastic, smug and arrogant."
- an un-named GMTV member of staff

"Even RI:SE was better than GMTV!"

Fiona Phillips is one of the most disliked faces on television. She has a few faces, so maybe people dislike different ones.

From a now defunct website (well only two members joined, so it was hardly a surprise!):

"Fiona Phillips is one of the best-known people in Britain - waking us up bright & early at 7am several mornings each week! Men love her, and women try to copy her hairstyle!

Everyone loves her for her mad sense of humour & her brilliant skills at interviewing everyone from politicians to families in crisis. Together with her GMTV co-presenters she covers the major issues of the day & speaks to those who can explain how they affect us all. She is to be admired for her honest, caring & non-judgemental approach. So it’s about time she had a website!!"

Well the facts, yes facts as documented by GMTV viewers and readers of the newspaper she patronises us all in, have been logged. These facts show the statement above to be a rare opinion of her.

Another Interview With Fiona

We really are being spoilt this week because hot on the wheels of Fiona Phillip's interview in the TVTimes is another one, this time in the free magazine from the Sunday Mirror. The interview is accompanied by a photo shoot with Fiona wearing some very weird clothes and looking scary. However, it's the interview that is the interesting part for she opens that big mouth of her's and starts to let rip. Here are some highlights:

On Actors

"I've met actors with a superiority complex and they're vile to people they don't need to impress. I can't name names because they might turn up on the sofa again" --- Most people who meet Fiona think it's her with the superiority complex! And maybe it was best just to say nothing at all if you're worried about stars returning to the sofa!

On Former co-presenter Eamonn Holmes

"I don't see Eamonn at all. We got along professionally, but I think Eamonn always wanted it to be his own programme, I think the world of him, but I recon he thought there was a plot to get him out of there, which there wasn't."

Where do we begin with ripping this to shreds? Well to begin with on the same page as Fiona says this is another quote from her, in big letters saying:

"Seeing off Eamonn Holmes from the sofa was a life changing event - I didn't think anyone ever manage that" -

The connotations of that statement seem to suggest that there was a plot, seeing off implies Fiona wanted rid of him, she 'chased' him out as it were. So doesn't that rather contradict her 'there was no plot" stance. But then in the TVTimes interview she said:

"Life's easier now. I still miss him - BUT on the other hand I have skip in my step as I'm coming into work".

So Fiona you miss him but you're so overjoyed when coming into work, as opposed to before, because he's gone. Sounds to me like you're being two-faced again and contradicting yourself. Some things never change.

On Strictly Come Dancing:

"I enjoyed the training but when I went out to perform I realised the rest of them were treating it as a major competition. It was so frightening not being able to dance and knowing all your colleagues can. But it made me really cross this year - they're all crying and saying 'If I go out I'll be devastated. Emma Bunton going back to her day job and getting in a state about it! I never said that."

Going into Strictly Come Dancing wasn't a good idea and Fiona probably agrees. After all us poor television owners have to put up with her on the weekday mornings let alone prime time Saturday evening! But here she slags off poor Emma Bunton who has more charm and talent in her little finger than Fiona will ever have!

Well that's quiet enough from Fiona for now but do keep checking back for updates on this page. We're sure they'll be plenty soon knowing Fiona. And check out the bottom of the page we're we list a few other presents and celeb's who get on our nerves!

Latest FP News: 10 Years at GMTV

The TV Times celebrated Fiona Phillip's 10th anniversary at GMTV with an interview with the derived woman herself. For some reason the TVTimes felt the needed to mark, or indeed celebrated, this occasion for reasons unknown to most people. In the interview Fiona Phillips discussed the highs and lows of her 10 years, for most such nostagalia would be full of low points and the only high points would be when Fiona was absent from the studio.

So what were such highlights? Well meeting Donny Osmond and acting like a pathetic school girl around him was her high point, for most that was cringe tv at its worst, while a low point was Strictly Come Dancing. Apparently Mrs Phillips prefers X-Factor because its real people with real lives.. as opposed to Dancing where the money from the phone calls goes to charity as opposed to fat cats' bank balances.

And it is with the greatest regret that we report that Fiona Phillips has signed a three-year contract with GMTV. So that means another three bloody years with that flaming woman on her screens! Who do we have to thank for this new contract? Her husband maybe who just happens to be very high up in GMTV!

Something to make you laugh, after that depressing piece of news, according to Sir Dennis Norden himself Fiona Phillips is in the T.W.A.T files! We couldn't agree more about that one.

Fiona Close Up:

Why is Fiona Phillips one of the most disliked, if not the most disliked, woman on television? Could it be the fact she says one thing on GMTV, and then another in her cheap rag articles? Could it be that she will be nice to someone while interviewing them, and then slag them off in her tabloid junk? Maybe its the fact she comes out with silly comments at all the wrong times? It might be simply because she asks questions or passes comments to people that are not worth the time of day? Who knows, but from the number of emails, posts on numerous forums and general debate across the UK the evidence proves Fiona is disliked as a person, and more so as a 'presenter.'

Recently a magazine had the headline: "My children BEG me not to go to work" little does Fiona know - being so out of touch with the real world - that the majority of the UK public are hoping she'll not go into work too. The hype around the presenters and the show (ITV have a habit of believing their own hype, which is at times rather amusing as no one but ITV believes it and its nice to see them making fools of themselves) means that these people get a bit of ego problems, think they're popular and think the show is great. Sadly, for them, but amusing for us, its just not true. So enjoy our collection - as made by the general public - of Fiona Phillips moments that make her so loathed.

Fiona Files:

Below is only a handful of Fiona facts, things that make her disliked. If we listed everything gathered and sent to us over the years, we'd have about 30 pages of quotes, so here is a simple selection to illustrate her talentless time on a talentless station - well lets face it any company that brands most of their shows with the same word "Today" is a bit lacking somewhere.

We can't include every Fiona cock-up, that would actually mean having to watch the dire GMTV, so instead we rely on you, who may by accident switch to GMTV, while searching for BBC1 provide us with her finest worst bits.

24th January 2007: Tuneless Mrs. Phillips

Talikng to Billy Bragg today she said 'I've been humming your song 'Shipbuilding' all morning'.
Billy corrects her: 'That's by Elvis Costello' Fiona lays the blame: 'Oh, all the crew told me that was one of yours!" Cue pretended embarrassment from Fiona.

23rd January 2007: Catty-Woman

Fiona Phillips was being extremely catty to Andrew Castle non-stop. He was linking to an item about winter being a time for getting away (holidays), and she said 'are you going away? For good? He said no, and she replied 'shame'. There were other examples. It didn't seem like banter to me, and he appeared at a loss as to how to react. She then continued muttering under her breath at everything he was saying.

17th January 2007: The National Joke Can't Take One:

Today she was a little bit, as one viewer described "snippy." When Ashley Jenson jokingly suggested that she couldn't have the Beckham's over for dinner because she didn't know if they ate. Fiona, pretending to be friend of all the stars, had a curt respose in her typical anal style: "of course they eat." Funny that Fiona can't take a joke - seen as she is a national one herself.

Is co-host Andew Castle getting a little bored of the queen of chav telly? Newszone loved his comment about 'having to work with a Welsh Witch' everyday. Who could he possibly mean?

26th September 2006: Opinions Of An Unwise Woman:

Fiona decides to do an impression of Cherrie Blair (who apparently called Gordon Brown a liar and was overheard by a respected female journalist) and then follows it with the comments: "I know who I'd believe, and that's Cherrie." So, impartiality thrown out the window at GMTV and secondly she's calling a journalist a liar. On what grounds? Does she know something the rest of us don't? Calling reporters liars.. I wonder how the reporters at GMTV feel about that.

Sorry, I implied that GMTV have professionals working for them, my mistake. If NewsHour is anything to go by, news in GMTV standards is opening titles that look more like a cheap American chat show, with the presenters grinning at us - no news footage features - then a couple of competition strands with faded celebrities, feature reports that appear in the lifestyle programme an hour later and very little in the way of detailed and indepth news reporting.

21th September 2005:

Revealing Too Much:
She just did an interview with Coronation Street actress Sally Lindsay about her work for Alzheimer's disease.

Sally was careful to say the reason she got involved was because she had witnessed 'somebody close to her' suffering from Alzheimer's and went on to describe how emotional and distressing the whole era was for her. Fiona then commented, 'Yes, my mother was like that, maybe not as bad as your nan.' Revealing the relation to Sally, whom she had not spoken of at all. Again, the guest did not look impressed.

In the same programme she turned a serious bullying issue into a farse by laughing just as the item was coming to a close. Made the whole serious nature of the debate seem a little demeaned.

19th September 2005:

Ugly Baby?:
Bringing an interview to a close with Liberal Democrat leader, Charles Kennedy, she asked how is recently born child was doing. After the nice little chit-chat. Charles commented that the said baby would not be making a public appearance at the up-and-coming party conference. To this Fiona decided the best word to describe the news would be "good." If only FP decided not to make public apperances, we'd all give the same answer she did.

16th September 2005:

Show Up Your Co-Presenter:
Today, FP decided to on a whim - or maybe 'she' just didn't bother to think about it, which is the most likely reason - to show up her co-presenter Ben Shepard. Cute Ben, next to the clapped out old trout makes for interesting viewing. Maybe 'she' decided to get her own back on his looks by humiliating him:

Fiona was raving on how great Jessie Wallace looks these days, but without batting an eyelid (or gurning - made a nice change) she told viewers that Ben doesn't think Jessie is good looking at all. This lead to Ben having to try and make excuses, in a very embrarrassed style. Note, this is not the first time such a thing has happened. Viewers tell us she has a habit of showing up co-presenters by seemingly being so thick she can't tell between friendly banter and showing up your co-workers.

12th and 13th September 2005:

Christopher Ain't Impressed:
Christopher Casanove is being interviewed about the current production of My Fair Lady. She came out with a number of incorrect statements about both MFL and Christoper himself and his work. He, thankfully, for the audience watching gave her the most disgusted look. Well done him. This isn't a one-off. I note that she constantly gets her facts wrong when interviewing people.

In the same programme she called co-presenter at GMTV Kate Garraway's wedding a 'shotgun' one.

The following day all professionalisum was yet again thrown out the window as she gushed and loved up Status Quo. Giggling like a little spoilt brat. Cringworthy for the guests and viewers. In the same show, the ultimate reason why this woman should have been left to do nothing more than 'showbiz reports' from America:

A very emotional widower (a young single mother) was constantly being talked over by Fiona. Compassion? Nope, just the usual patronising style and terrible interview technique. This lady had won a chance of having a garden makeover which her late husband had wanted to do to make it a safer place for their young daughter. The husband had only died of Cancer a few months ago. Fiona has no sense of occasion or how the interviewee might be feeling. Useless.

She, we note, also seems to like to slag off soap stars, sadly, this is one of her major two-faced features. As GMTV seems to have more soap star guests in to interview her slagging off which turns into loving the actor/show once they're in the studio is very annoying to viewers. If you can't live by your insults dear, don't say them at all.

During the week of the 5th to 9th September 2005:

Insults From Mrs Perfect:
In typical Fiona 'I'm perfect, so I'll slate anyone I fancy' Phillips made a very rude comment about Carla Romano after an interview by Carla with George Clooney and other Hollywood stars. Once the footage was shown a live link with Carla eventually handed back to London and for no reason and completely uncalled for Fiona made shudder movements, made a twisty face and finally muttered "I'm glad she's gone". Carla however heard it and didn't look impressed.

Later, in the same show, she made it clear she was disgusted at Keith Chegwin's hairy back.

During the week of 29th Aug to 2nd September 2005:

Man Boobs.. ..Comment From One Huge Boob:
The highlight of this week was Fiona grabing Television Critic Richard Arnolds 'man boobs' and then commenting upon the size of them. Yet again, unprofessional, and seemingly using her status as wife of the boss to get away with whatever she darn well likes. Fiona really is the pits of a bad bunch of presenters.

A note from 2003 and earlier:

Fiona was presenting (badly) a segment about models with unusual looks. She was interviewing a one such model about his profession then for no reason suddenly started discussing his private life. She decided upon herself that it must be hard for him to find a partner, and so decided to patronise him with the typical Fiona style: "Never mind, you'll find someone eventually, there's someone out there for everyone."

The fake empathy was clear to even the guest, who simply, like most guests who have the misfortune to be 'interviewed' by her, gave her a facial expression that suggested she should just shut up, as she was clearly bonkers.

Insensitive? After Leeds United supporters were murdered abroad, she decides to blame the British fans, even though all the evidence suggests this was not the case at all. How the victims familes must love her.

Viewers Views Negative:

I doubt any such comments sent to the ITV or GMTV duty office get passed onto Mrs Twofaces, so here are those comments that don't venture beyond the public relations team:

"I am so pleased a site has opened up a place to discuss FP, we are very much entitled to have an opinion on her, because lets face it; she has enough opinions of her own on anything and everyone else. Someone in her job should however engage the brain to think before the mouth speaks. She makes GMTV look foolish. Then again, that doesn't take much doing. Bring back TVAM, it might have been cheap but it did have presenters who could think." - Kerrie

"Her presenting skills are appalling. Her out of place comments, stupid. Fiona is just so unprofessional, she can't interview for toffee" - Gary

"What is all the elbow rubbing about? And how she always seems to be rubbing her hands and pulling faces! Is she suffering from an illness? On and also.. She's an awful opinionated tedious moron. See any random tape of GMTV for proof." - Oz

"Fiona is on holiday. Shame, I was hoping she'd left for good. She keeps suggesting she will, can she make it soon please? Oh and when she leaves ITV can it be with the added proviso that she never appears on any television station ever again!" - Arron

"If Fiona left ITV, there would be a national day of celebrations! Millions of people would be offering her a hand to carry her luggage, just to make sure she really, really was going for good!" - Sean

"Another holiday for Fiona, she is having more and more time off now. IT IS GREAT! Maybe she visited NewsZone and totally realised how unwanted she is. I find her the most irritating person in television history." - Davina

"I saw on a forum people asking where Fiona has gone. This isn't a good idea is it? If we talk about her like that she might think she really is popular. Anyway, I'm so glad that for once someone I dislike has a universal hatred by others." - Wendy

"Who cares where Fiona Philips is, as long as its not on TV, it doesn't matter. She can patronise and talk down to people in the supermarkets as long as we don't have to watch her making an idiot of herself doing it on TV." - Carl

"Everytime Fiona goes on a 'well earned' rest. (Well earned for the viewers who have to endure her because we have no other choice apart from boring news on BBC1 or kids stuff on other channels!) We should just celebrate the fact we don't have to look at her gurning and listen to her stupid and mis-judged comments!" - Paula and Barry

"Credit to the DS forum, I saw these posts and had to share them here knowing how Newszone also dislikes the buffoon FP:

I trapped her under a mug along with the huge spider which dared to invade my living room. With any luck she's been eaten..

..She probably offended the spider with some inappropriate comment and then bored it to death with her unwanted opinions!" (again thanks to posters Lila and Foxychic on DS) ps..She's SO amateur it's unbelievable" - Martin

"A few words for NewsZonE that describe Fiona from personal experience: Patronising, conceited ,obnoxious, snide, sarcastic, smug and arrogant." - an un-named GMTV member of staff

"I'm so pleased that the dire Gossip Making TeleVision has been reconised by others as being terrible. I admit, I watch it. But for only one reason. It reminds me every morning that there are really people out there more useless and stupid than me, and they all present on that show. Best way to start your day, laughing at those gimps." - Faye

"Fiona used to be the Hollywood reporter. She should have stayed there. Has anyone else noticed how sexist she is too?" - Colin

"When it comes down to politics she is totally unprofessional. She doesn't like any compitent presenter would not show any biast, she shows she's a Labour fan everytime - totally not on.

Does anyone recall the time - in the garbage that is The Mirror - her write up about Busted, the ex-boy band who apparently snubbed her at the GMTV studios because they had taste and good sense?

She decided to ask fans of busted to boycot buying there latest album because they had publicly stated they voted Conservative. Fiona seemed to forget that in the UK we are a democracy. How can you trust a presenter to bring all the facts when so often its just the facts she wants to air?" – David

Viewers Views Positive:

Unlike Fiona on the 26th of September 2006, we here at NewsZone like to, where possible give both sides of a story. So below is viewers comments that are in support of Fiona:

"She makes Richard Madley seem genuine." - Peter
